Founding principle

PPS was founded on one principle - horses will give more back if you put more in. The diets of performance horses in other equine disciplines, such as racing or eventing, are supplemented to achieve peak performance within the equine athlete.

The Polo Pony is the the ultimate performance horse and the ultimate equine athlete encompassing speed and stamina whilst enduring physically demanding stop-starts, ride-offs and twist-and-turns. A race horse does not race frequently. An event horse does not event frequently. Yet in polo we ask our ponies to give us their all often several times a week.

A whole new ball game

The science of feeding has advanced considerably over recent years, however, very little is ever published or addressed to polo. There are hundreds of equine supplements on the market and this can often be a minefield for those wishing to get more out of their string. For this reason alone, and by using the latest research, PPS has formulated and developed products that actually ‘do what they say they do’, so be assured that you are buying premium products for your ultimate equine athletes.

When one compares the lifestyle and the demands of a polo pony to that of a race horse, similarities suggest that a high proportion of polo ponies are likely to be suffering from the performance-limiting disease of gastric ulceration.

Feeding regimes - High-energy diets and limited access to grazing

Intense workloads - A consideration is that the high abdominal pressures that occur in the galloping horse may be sufficient to squeeze the acid stomach contents into the upper, acid-sensitive non-glandular portion of the stomach.

Transportation - The tension of muscles used to balance during transportation can provide a stress full environment where gastric acid secretion is high and normally on an empty stomach prior to a match for example.

Potential consequences of gastric ulcers within polo may include, however are not limited to –

  • A reluctance to work or accelerate to full potential.
  • Avoiding contact and potentially under performing in ride-offs.
  • Poor body condition - poor gut health leads to inefficient absorption of essential vitamins and minerals as well as putting extra pressure on the body to maintain peak fitness and therefore general performance.

Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM work in synergy to help lubricate joints as well as stimulating the substances necessary for the formation of joint tissue. This is important because as a polo pony ages and is subjected to continual joint ‘wear and tear’, it may not produce a sufficient amount of glucosamine naturally. This can result in cartilage that loses its ability to act as a shock absorber. The joints then become stiff and painful, resulting in a limited range of motion that sometimes goes unnoticed.

Huge demands are put on a polo pony’s joints throughout the season and the practice of using ‘bute’ to mask the signs of sensitivity is all too common, especially if that pony has to play the following tournament day, for example. The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ‘bute’ has been shown to contribute to the performance-limiting disease of equine ulcers.

Electrolytes or "salts" are minerals dissolved in the blood and tissues of the horse's body, which carry a negative or positive charge and bind with another ion to make a "salt". When a horse sweats during exercise, or stressful activity such as travelling, he loses "salts" such as sodium, chloride and potassium. These losses can be considerable, especially in hot weather and can cause tiredness, muscle stiffness, dehydration and equine colic. Without the presence of electrolytes a horse's body cannot retain water so just offering water after exercise will not re-hydrate your horse.
